Loren James, MD

Dr. Loren James specializes in General Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine/Arthroscopy with his areas of expertise including arthroscopy of the shoulder and knee, meniscal repair, ACL reconstruction and ligament reconstruction of the knee, rotator cuff repair, labral repair and general orthopedics including treatment of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, knee, foot and ankle. Dr. James joined Lemak Sports Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2013 following his Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine fellowship at New Mexico Orthopaedics. He remained with Lemak Sports Medicine until he joined Tuscaloosa Orthopedic and Joint Institute in 2023.

Dr. James, a cum laude graduate and Chemistry major of Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, where he participated in intercollegiate football, obtained his Medical Doctorate from The University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 2007. He was elected into Alpha Omega Alpha and Phi Kappa Phi Medical/Honor Societies for ranking in the top percentile of his medical school class. Dr. James then completed his surgical internship and Orthopedic residency in Kentucky. During his time there, he served as Chief Resident for The University of Kentucky Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine.

Dr. James is a member of the American College of Surgeons and the American Medical Association. His professional society memberships include the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Previously, Dr. James supplied team coverage to Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School and Tates Creek High School while in Kentucky, as well as to athletes of The University of Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky University, Transylvania University and Georgetown College. He also assisted Manzano High School and El Dorado High School in New Mexico, provided team coverage for the Albuquerque Isotopes, AAA affiliate of MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers, and cared for athletes of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He has also served as the team doctor/surgeon for Prattville High School and Prattville Junior High School, Marbury High School and Marbury Junior High School, Stanhope Elmore High School and Stanhope Elmore Junior High School as well as for the University of Montevallo. He has provided his medical expertise in all types of sports, including but not limited to football, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball and equestrian games.

Dr. James spends his spare time collecting sports memorabilia, participating in athletics, watching sports particularly intercollegiate athletics and cheering for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He also enjoys whitewater rafting, snorkeling, scuba-diving, shark-cage diving, snow skiing, hiking the national parks and international traveling. But by far his favorite activity is spending time with his son.
